The museum’s exhibits and programs cover U.S. military history from the Revolutionary War to the present War on Terror, with an emphasis on the interwar U.S. Army (1920 – 41). By special arrangement with the Montana National Guard, the museum’s main exhibit building is located in Building T-316, Fort Missoula—the former headquarters for the Fort Missoula District of the U.S. Civilian Conservation Corps. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, Army and civilian CCC personnel in Building T-316 oversaw the processing, equipping and training of over 40,000 CCC corpsmen. Major exhibits include a model of the World War II attack transport USS Missoula detailing the role of the ship and USMC Pvt. Louis Charlo in raising the first flag over Mt. Suribachi during the battle of Iwo Jima; an 1863 Ordnance gun produced for the New Jersey State Militia during the Civil War; a Huey UH-1H helicopter used in Vietnam; and an M7 self-propelled howitzer.
