things to do in the water
Surfing in a landlocked mountain town is not only possible, it’s a fast-growing and exhilarating way to spend time on our rivers. Waves are man-made by strategically positioning river rocks to create waves prime for surfing. And this isn’t just a summer sport. When the water’s high in winter and spring, the waves are too. If you’re not convinced, head to Brennan’s Wave on the Clark Fork River in downtown Missoula. Here you can watch whitewater surfers and kayakers playing on the wave. You can even rent a board right there in town, if surfing is your thing.
Dive into the season with our exclusive "Spring Seven" list—a treasure trove of must-do experiences that prove spring in Montana is the perfect time to visit.
PLEASE NOTE: river surfing is not easy. Only experienced boarders and paddlers are encouraged to seek out our surf spots. If you’re interested in trying out this new-ish sport, we recommend you talk to a local surf and board shop, and get your feet wet—literally—in calm waters first.
