Spot the endangered and majestic bald eagle best in autumn along Montana's waterways and lakes. With a white head and tail and a dark brown body and wings, bald eagles are unmistakable. Ranging in length from 27 to 37 inches with a wingspan of 5.5 to 8 feet, bald eagles are second in size of American birds of prey. Living in Montana year-round, bald eagles regularly inhabit wetlands, open water areas, major waterbodies and spring spawning streams, with nesting-site selection dependent upon local food availability. Bald eagles primarily feed on fish, with a secondary diet of waterfowl. For more, visit Montana Field Guide.
