With females up to 1,000 pounds and males up to 2,000 pounds, these nomadic grazers are the largest land mammals in North America and the closest relatives to domesticated cattle. They have shaggy, chocolate-colored coats, and both male and female bison have horns for self-defense. Their heads hang low, making it easier to eat vegetation that's growing close to the ground.
