A small sea duck, the harlequin duck has a modest bill, short neck and long tail. They prefer turbulent water along fast-moving mountain streams or rocky coastlines and are well-adapted to harsh surroundings. In Glacier National Park, they are primarily drawn to old-growth or mature forests. Their Rocky Mountain diet is typically made up of aquatic insects, with a keen liking to larvae attached to rocks along the river bottom. For more, visit Montana Field Guide.
